Dear Mike Timpane RIP 11/27/35 – 1/18/2022
Our beloved Mike Timpane left us, the NOVA Catholic Community, with loving memories. He was one of the founders of our community and was the chairperson in 1968. He brought wisdom, humor, kindness, and thoughtfulness to every encounter. His memory is a blessing to all of us who had the good fortune of knowing him.
Mike married Genevieve LaGrua in 1957. Their 64 years together were an adventure; from Mike’s stint in the Air Force to his presidency of Columbia Teachers College in New York. Their home is filled with memories fo their many travels and celebrations. Their children, Michael, Joseph (deceased), Paul, and David, reflect the rich experiences they had growing up in the Timpane household. They all remember and laugh at their early NOVA days being taken by their parents to long liturgies. Even though they were gone for several years they kept in touch and were welcomed with open arms when they returned from New York.
Mike was a staunch supporter of and investor in education and a helluva good golfer. The NOVA Community, his family, friends, and colleagues have lost a super-star.
Below are some remembrances of NOVA members:
Mike brought humor, kindness and thoughtfulness to every encounter. We feel blessed to have known him.
I valued and will always remember Mike’s humor and his thoughtful comments during all our gatherings.
This saying good-bye is such a sad thing. We are thankful to have known this caring, funny man and we are grateful to both Mike and Gen for all they have done to make NOVA the community it is today.
Mike cared deeply about education. He was involved advocationally and professionally at many levels; in several jobs over the years. He was just under Cabinet-level (in education) at (former) HEW; was appointed to serve as President, Teacher's College/Columbia.
He was my role model as I sought counsel when I ran for School Board. He and Gen were supporters of the Dream Project; they sponsored named scholarships.
He leaves a legacy in Higher Education.
I have a profound respect and love for Gen and Mike.
Mike was a strong supporter of CBU and was on the Board of Trustees.
Education was important to Mike
And that welcoming, resonant voice!
From the beginning Mike had this way of being both encouraging and challenging. His supportive hand is a model, and will be remembered.
In remembrance of Mike, I hope we all continue to challenge one another to think outside the box, not get stuck in our "this is how we do it" and love as he loved Gen.
I miss Mike’s kindness and gentleness already.
For me Mike dying is like a giant sequoia cut down…..
Now his memory and his legacy will linger long, amazing to casual tourists, nourishing to new generations, beautiful but ineffably sad to those who knew him best and longest.
We will miss Mike's humor, intelligence and dedication to friends!
I valued and will always remember Mike’s humor and his thoughtful comments during all our gatherings.
A wonderful friend and role model
